How did the ice age form:

After the major lava flows the air got much cooler. Snow and ice accumulated and formed an ice sheet. This ice sheet moved into Canada and the Northern United States. The moving glacier shaped Washington by filling in the Puget Sound and carving out mountains and rivers. The ice stopped moving south of present day Olympic City.

When did this happen:

The last glacial period, called the Ice Age, ended about 10 thousand years ago

How thick was it:

  • 5,000 feet thick over current day Bellingham.
  • 4,000 feet over current day Seattle
  • 1,800 feet thick over current day Tacoma
