Culture: What is the climate or atmosphere of your organization? What does it feel like to be there? Are people happy to be working in your site? Are you happy?

As I arrived at the dental office, I noticed a very distinct climate. People were always joking and seemed to be having a good time. Every one gets along, and even develops friendly relationships between each other outside of work. Even though they like to joke around a lot, they still work diligently to help eachother out. This good-humored atmosphere makes all the patients much more comfortable. I am very happy at the dental office because everyone makes me feel at home and are very polite and helpful.

Skills Observed: What employee skills have you observed? How did people acquire these skills? How important is training to the job? What abilities seem to be demonstrated?

Some skills essential to the workplace are a friendly attitude. My mentors have told me that making sure the patient is comfortable in the chair is their main priority. If the patient isn't comfortable, they aren't going to cooperate. I have observed many cleanings and have learned that strong hands are essential. Training on the job is very important. Most of the people working in the office spent a year or so in an internship just to gain the necessary skills. Technology skills are also needed to run the machines. I have learned how to run the x-ray film producer and how to use some of the cleaning tools. I have also learned how to do a prophy cleaning and have had impressions taken of my teeth.

Purpose: Some companies are private; others are public. Some companies are created to make a profit; others are designed to provide a social service. Every organization has a purpose for existence. What is your organization's purpose?

Dr. Passmore's Family Dentistry is a private company. It's purpose is to keep people mouth's healthy without costing a whole lot. I know from my own experiences that their services are very thorough and reasonably priced.

Organization: Every company has a different organizational structure. Some companies have presidents, chief executive officers, treasurers, and other administrative positions. Some companies have divisions; others have units, departments, or offices. How is your company organized.

The Dental Office is organized into many different divisions. First there is the secretary up front that answers phones, takes care of paperwork, and prepares files for the appointments. Second there are dental assistants. They clean equipment, do partial cleanings, and help the dentist with fillings. Next there are the dental hygenists. They clean teeth, check for oral cancers, take x-rays, and help the dentist when needed. Lastly there is the denist. He/She oversees the cleanings, does fillings, pulls teeth, and other services.
