Interview with Nikki Fullerton at Dr.Passmore's Family Dentistry 1) Please tell me a little about yourself. I enjoy spending time with my two kids and attending their games. I also enjoy my home life with my livestock. 2) What is a typical day of work like for you? It is usually easy-going. Some days (usually after a full moon) there are a lot of emergencies that come in and then the day tends to become a little hectic. 3) What are your main duties and responsibilities? Taking care of the patients and making sure they are comfortable in the chair during their appointment. I also clean the work stations and instruments. 4) How long have you worked here? Almost 3 years 5) Did you have to go to college for this job, if so, for how long and where? Yes, I had to go to the Kidman Bussiness University in Spokane for one year to become a Dental Assistant. 6) Why did you choose this career? I was actually going to school for law enforcement and was having my annual physical and dental check-up. The woman cleaning my teeth asked me if I had ever considered the dental field because there was a demand. I changed my career choice and went to school for dental assisting. 7) What skills and training are necessary for your position? Going through an intership program to get the skills needed for hands on work. 8) How did you acquire these skills? Through my own internship with all of my hands-on work and work experience. School just taught me the basics. 9) Do you consider a career in this field satisfying? In what ways? Absolutely, I have a great boss and a shorter work week so I have more at home time. 10) Do you find there are additional rewards beside just a paycheck? Yes, I have made many new friends by working with my fellow employees and by meeting the patients. 11) How important is getting along with others in this career? Very important. When you have appointments and are booked all day, you rely on others to help you by preparing your instruments and cleaning stations. 12) Are there any other personality traits or skills necessary for working here? No, just basically getting along with your other employees and being talkitive with patients to make sure they are comfortable. 13) Do you have any other advice for me or someone who is looking to pursue the dental field? Go for Dental Hygiene. It is more rewarding and you are able to pick your work hours with better pay.
