Journal Entry #2

Monday, January 30th. Today was my first day interning for the Dayton Vet. Clinic. There was two surgeries while I was there. The first surgery was the spading of a cat. Dr. Kennie Reeves my mentor was just sewing her up when I got in.

Then we prepped for the second surgery of a nine year old dog that had a tumor that was around 5 to 6 inches long. The tumor was a fat tumor so it wasn't hurting the dog. But was effecting mobility so it had to be removed. To prep the dog for surgery we first had to give him a shot to relax him. Then a tube was put into his throat to administer the anesthetic that make him sleep. (I learned that since animals throats are all different sizes there is these balloon things on the tube that you pump full after the tube is inserted so that the dog is only breathing through the tube which supplies oxygen as well as the anesthetic.)

We then shaved the area on the dog where the surgery will be taken place. Afterwards it was disinfected. The dog was then moved to the surgery table, where the area was again disinfected. (When disinfecting the area you wipe outward and NOT inward because your wiping away the bacteria you don't want to wipe it back on to the area. Then no one else touches the dog after that except Dr. Kennie who then preceded to do surgery.
