Dayton Elementary First Graders “BARK”
Every child loves stuffed puppies. Some children talk to theirs,
while others find it comforting to clutch one in uncomfortable
situations. Dayton Elementary first graders will be discovering
a stuffed puppy can do so much more. Thanks to Windermere Real
Estate/Blue Mountain Realtors, the stuffed companions will be helping
students build confidence, self esteem and sharpen their reading
skills. For the second year in a row, they are sponsoring Learning
with Lucky reading incentive program for all DES first graders. “Literacy
is the basic foundation and a lifelong gift,” says Blaine
Bickelhaupt, Owner/Broker, Windermere-Dayton.
Each student will receive a stuffed Labrador puppy and a book log.
Once a student reaches a reading milestone, he/she names the puppy—and
the rewards continue from there. Reading to a puppy helps students
become more comfortable reading aloud.
Julie Bickelhaupt of Windermere-Dayton
states, “We are proud
of our school and we want to show support to the children of our
community with this program that truly promotes reading.” Last
week, first and second graders enjoyed a visit from the “real” Lucky,
a very easygoing Labrador who loves kids. That same day, stuffed
puppies were delivered to Mrs. Startin’s first grade classroom.
Students are excited to begin the Learning With Lucky reading program.

The program began in 2005 in Coeur d’Alene, ID. To date, there
are 3,153 graduates of the Learning with Lucky program throughout
the United States. The program was piloted at Bryan Elementary in
Coeur d’Alene and proved to be such a success that the founders
trademarked the concept and made it available for businesses, associations,
or individuals to sponsor for school districts in their area.
WASL Booklet Review
Parents/guardians of DES students are welcome to view their child’s
WASL test booklet. Guidelines, information and the state form needed
to pull a child’s test booklet may be found at http://www.k12.wa.us/assessments/StudentRecordRequest.aspx.
A parent/guardian may also contact the Office of Superintendent of
Public Instruction at assessment@k12.wa.us or (360) 725-6348.
Logging in
Many of you “log in” to keep up with your child’s
assignments, attendance, and lunch balance. Srop by the office during
conferences if you would like to have quick and easy access to this
information. The link to “Family Access/Check Your Grades” is
available on the school district or elementary web sites: http://www.dayton.wednet.edu/ES/Index.htm.
Also on our web site are links to the lunch menu, pre-approved absence
form, safety patrol schedule, AR book lists, PTSO contact information,
and the parent/student handbook. Let us know if you have ideas of
what else might be useful to you as parents.
Girls Circle
Dayton Elementary School, in conjunction with the YWCA and the 21st
Century After School Program, is offering an 8 week session called
Girl’s Circle, which is open to 6th grade girls. Ann Passmore
will be leading the program, which is centered around meeting the
needs of our pre-teen school population and teaching them to skills
to manage their feelings and behaviors.
21st Century After School Program
The After School Program has taken off with a bang this year. Kindergarten
through second grade are learning about Washington State, participating
in games that promote math and reading skills, and have been doing
art projects. Third and fourth graders are learning about our community
by touring a local business once a week. This age group also went
through a time machine and learned about ancient Egypt. Fifth through
eighth graders have been cooking, playing Wii Wednesday, and participating
in Communications and Relationship Empowerment . The Curb Stompers
4-H group has partnered with our program and is currently meeting
once a week. Last week, we participated in Lights On After School
, the nationally recognized day to promote after school programs.
There is still time and room to sign up.
Scholastic Book Fair
This year’s Book Fair will again be open all day both days
of conferences (Thursday and Friday, Nov. 5 and 6). It will also
be open before and after school on Wednesday, Nov. 4 and Monday,
Nov. 9. If you would like to help with the Book Fair, contact Kristin
Ramirez at 382-2507 or e-mail kristinr@dayton.wednet.edu. The Book
Fair is a fundraiser for the 5th grade ski program and helps ensure
that all students are able to ski, regardless of ability to pay.
Celebrating Success
Forty students received Accelerated Reader awards at October's Celebration
Assembly. Several students reached multiple
levels on the AR points scale, with one student jumping nine
levels, one jumping three levels, and another four levels. These
students are known and admired for being avid readers.
Another
35 students, chosen by their classroom teachers, were presented
SHARP awards.

Quick Tips from Teachers
To be ready to succeed, children need:
• A good night’s
sleep
• A healthy breakfast and lunch
• Clothing and shoes appropriate for the weather and for safe play
• A signed planner or Wed. envelope
• Reading minutes logged & turned in
• Good attendance…and arrival on time
• Parent & teacher communication
Discipline Solutions:
Q: You’ve asked your child to do something,
but he ignores you.
A: Make sure you have your youngster’s attention. Slowly and
clearly repeat what you want him to do. “Jason, I need you to
take the trash out now.” Make sure he gets started—and
remember to thank him when he’s done.
Q: Your child argues with your decision, trying to wear you down.
A: Calmly say, “I am not going to give in, no matter how much
you argue,” then walk away to indicate that the conversation
is over. In some cases, you may be willing to reconsider. If so, ask
your child to write a letter explaining his side, and tell him you’ll
get back to him at a specific time.
Sssshhhhhh! Quiet calms the chaos. Want to help your
child handle life’s stresses a little better? Turn down the
volume at home. Studies show that kids from loud, chaotic homes often
have anxiety
issues or trouble handling their environment. To calm the chaos:
Turn off the TV when you’re not watching it. Kids don’t
need the background noise.
Offer refuge. Find a quiet place where your child can unwind.
Set up routines. They help your child maintain a sense of order.
