Qualified Staff:

Parents may request information regarding the professional qualifications of a child's classroom teacher. DES staff have met all professional qualifications to be considered Highly Capable.

Everyone enjoyed the recent 50/50 BMX Extreme Show, which was sponsored by QSP, the magazine sale parent company. It was a fine ending to a successful fundraiser for 6th grade environmental camp at Camp Wooten.

School Notes:

Full Day Kindergarten Begins
With kindergarten enrollment at 24 students, administrators made the decision to change from the current half day program to an all day program. Teacher Sue Yenney and Paraprofessional Peggy Robanske are looking forward to more time with students.

BAD Program Continues
The Building a Dawg (BAD) drill team program for grades K-6 is back, this year under the direction of Melanie and Jason Mings. An informational brochure was sent home with students Wednesday, October 28. The program begins Sunday, November 8, in the high school gym and will run from 2:30 – 4:30. Cost is $20 per child. Sign up by November 8 to participate. Contact Melanie Mings at 520-3335 or 382-4763 for more information.

ECEAP News
With the pending sale of the “ECEAP House” on 2nd Street, there is a move in the works. ECEAP teacher Paul Ihle’s office and the ECEAP Parent Center will soon be located in a classroom near the elementary school office. The ECEAP classroom is already in our building, so parents are already used to coming and going. Supplies belonging to both special education and the ECEAP program are making their way into a storage area in the basement.

This month, the state's ECEAP program enrolled its 150,000th child since its 1985 creation. The Early Childhood Education and Assistance Program (ECEAP) provides free preschool education, family support, and health and nutrition services to low-income 3- and 4-year-old children and their families. Dayton’s program began in 1990 and is funded for 18 preschool slots.

Notices:

BULLYING AND HARASSMENT: Take every opportunity to talk with your children and their friends about being kind to and accepting of others. Encourage them to report to a trusted adult if they feel threatened either at school or on the way to/from school. We need to know so that steps can be taken to help. Parents might find the pamphlets available in the lobby helpful; they offer concrete ideas on possible ways to deal with the issues so that children do not feel so helpless. Here are a few ideas for your child(ren):

—Tell a friend. Ask a friend to help you. It’s tougher to pick on a person who has someone there for support.
—Walk away. It’s harder to bully someone who won’t stand still to listen
—Chill out. Bullies seem to target kids who respond to their taunts—girls who cry easily or boys who have a tendency to fly off the handle. So try hard not to show any emotion. It’s no fun to bully someone who doesn’t seem to care.
—Try not to be alone in places where the bully picks on you.
—Don’t fight back. You could get clobbered or make the situation worse.
—Write it down. Keep track of what happens—dates, times, places. Write down exactly what the bully says.
—Remember, it’s not your fault. Bullies don’t pick on you because of something you did. A bully is picking on you because of the way he or she feels. Some people bully others as a way of feeling popular, showing off, or making themselves look tough.
—Tell an adult.

NOTICE OF NON-DISCRIMINATION: The District complies with all federal rules and regulations, and does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national origin, gender, or disability. This holds true for all students who are interested in participating in educational programs and/or extracurricular school activities. Inquiries regarding compliance procedures may be directed to Rich Stewart, Section 504/ADA coordinator, and/or Jude Cornaggia, Title IX/RCW 28a640 officer. Both can be reached at the district office at 609 S Second Street, or by calling 382-2543.

Confidentiality: Dayton School District is prohibited from releasing any personally-identifiable records or files about an individual student without written parental consent. However, the district may release a list of students belonging to a group (i.e., Accelerated Reader button winners). The district may also release photographs of students for public information purposes. A student’s name and/or photo will be excluded from a listing of students upon written request by a parent. Dayton Elementary will not identify by name (without permission) students in photos placed on our web page.

Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA): Parents may…
1. Inspect and review your student’s education records within 45 days of the day the district receives a written request for access.
2. Request an amendment to your student’s education records if you believe they are inaccurate or misleading
3.Consent to disclosures of personally identifiable information contained in the student’s education records, except to the extent that FERPA authorizes disclosure without consent
4. File a complaint with the U.S. Dept. of Educ. concerning alleged failures by the District to comply with the requirements of FERPA

Dayton Elementary First Graders “BARK”
Every child loves stuffed puppies. Some children talk to theirs, while others find it comforting to clutch one in uncomfortable situations. Dayton Elementary first graders will be discovering a stuffed puppy can do so much more. Thanks to Windermere Real Estate/Blue Mountain Realtors, the stuffed companions will be helping students build confidence, self esteem and sharpen their reading skills. For the second year in a row, they are sponsoring Learning with Lucky reading incentive program for all DES first graders. “Literacy is the basic foundation and a lifelong gift,” says Blaine Bickelhaupt, Owner/Broker, Windermere-Dayton.
Each student will receive a stuffed Labrador puppy and a book log. Once a student reaches a reading milestone, he/she names the puppy—and the rewards continue from there. Reading to a puppy helps students become more comfortable reading aloud.

Julie Bickelhaupt of Windermere-Dayton states, “We are proud of our school and we want to show support to the children of our community with this program that truly promotes reading.” Last week, first and second graders enjoyed a visit from the “real” Lucky, a very easygoing Labrador who loves kids. That same day, stuffed puppies were delivered to Mrs. Startin’s first grade classroom. Students are excited to begin the Learning With Lucky reading program.

The program began in 2005 in Coeur d’Alene, ID. To date, there are 3,153 graduates of the Learning with Lucky program throughout the United States. The program was piloted at Bryan Elementary in Coeur d’Alene and proved to be such a success that the founders trademarked the concept and made it available for businesses, associations, or individuals to sponsor for school districts in their area.

WASL Booklet Review
Parents/guardians of DES students are welcome to view their child’s WASL test booklet. Guidelines, information and the state form needed to pull a child’s test booklet may be found at http://www.k12.wa.us/assessments/StudentRecordRequest.aspx. A parent/guardian may also contact the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction at assessment@k12.wa.us or (360) 725-6348.

Logging in
Many of you “log in” to keep up with your child’s assignments, attendance, and lunch balance. Srop by the office during conferences if you would like to have quick and easy access to this information. The link to “Family Access/Check Your Grades” is available on the school district or elementary web sites: http://www.dayton.wednet.edu/ES/Index.htm. Also on our web site are links to the lunch menu, pre-approved absence form, safety patrol schedule, AR book lists, PTSO contact information, and the parent/student handbook. Let us know if you have ideas of what else might be useful to you as parents.

Girls Circle
Dayton Elementary School, in conjunction with the YWCA and the 21st Century After School Program, is offering an 8 week session called Girl’s Circle, which is open to 6th grade girls. Ann Passmore will be leading the program, which is centered around meeting the needs of our pre-teen school population and teaching them to skills to manage their feelings and behaviors.

21st Century After School Program
The After School Program has taken off with a bang this year. Kindergarten through second grade are learning about Washington State, participating in games that promote math and reading skills, and have been doing art projects. Third and fourth graders are learning about our community by touring a local business once a week. This age group also went through a time machine and learned about ancient Egypt. Fifth through eighth graders have been cooking, playing Wii Wednesday, and participating in Communications and Relationship Empowerment . The Curb Stompers 4-H group has partnered with our program and is currently meeting once a week. Last week, we participated in Lights On After School , the nationally recognized day to promote after school programs. There is still time and room to sign up.

Scholastic Book Fair
This year’s Book Fair will again be open all day both days of conferences (Thursday and Friday, Nov. 5 and 6). It will also be open before and after school on Wednesday, Nov. 4 and Monday, Nov. 9. If you would like to help with the Book Fair, contact Kristin Ramirez at 382-2507 or e-mail kristinr@dayton.wednet.edu. The Book Fair is a fundraiser for the 5th grade ski program and helps ensure that all students are able to ski, regardless of ability to pay.

Celebrating Success
Forty students received Accelerated Reader awards at October's Celebration Assembly. Several students reached multiple levels on the AR points scale, with one student jumping nine levels, one jumping three levels, and another four levels. These students are known and admired for being avid readers.

Another 35 students, chosen by their classroom teachers, were presented SHARP awards.

Quick Tips from Teachers

To be ready to succeed, children need:

• A good night’s sleep
• A healthy breakfast and lunch
• Clothing and shoes appropriate for the weather and for safe play
• A signed planner or Wed. envelope
• Reading minutes logged & turned in
• Good attendance…and arrival on time
• Parent & teacher communication

Discipline Solutions:

Q: You’ve asked your child to do something, but he ignores you.
A: Make sure you have your youngster’s attention. Slowly and clearly repeat what you want him to do. “Jason, I need you to take the trash out now.” Make sure he gets started—and remember to thank him when he’s done.

Q: Your child argues with your decision, trying to wear you down.
A: Calmly say, “I am not going to give in, no matter how much you argue,” then walk away to indicate that the conversation is over. In some cases, you may be willing to reconsider. If so, ask your child to write a letter explaining his side, and tell him you’ll get back to him at a specific time.

Sssshhhhhh! Quiet calms the chaos. Want to help your child handle life’s stresses a little better? Turn down the volume at home. Studies show that kids from loud, chaotic homes often have anxiety issues or trouble handling their environment. To calm the chaos:

Turn off the TV when you’re not watching it. Kids don’t need the background noise.
Offer refuge. Find a quiet place where your child can unwind.
Set up routines. They help your child maintain a sense of order.
